The New York Mets have added another piece to their bullpen after agreeing to a two-year $10MM contract with southpaw Justin Wilson. The exact details of the contract are not known as of yet but should be around $5MM annually for the lefty reliever.
Wilson, 31, has pitched for four teams over his seven year career including the Pittsburgh Pirates who drafted him, New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers, and most recently the Chicago Cubs where he spent the last year and a half. Wilson owns a career 3.33 ERA over 370.2 total innings out of the bullpen with a 2.45 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Last season with the Cubs Wilson made 71 appearances pitching to the tune of a 3.46 ERA over 54.2 innings and had an impressive 11.4 K/9. He has been a pretty reliable and consistent pitcher during his career against both left hand hitters as well as right hand hitters while pitching in a minimum of 65 games in each of the last 5 seasons.
The Mets continue to bolster their bullpen as this will be the third reliever that they have added this off season. They acquired All-Star closer Edwin Diaz alongside Robinson Cano in the huge trade that kicked off the off season. As well as the Diaz acquisition, the Mets also brought back a familiar face in Jeurys Familia who was a free agent and signed a three-year deal with the club. With those two dominant righties already in the fold, the lefty Wilson will be a nice reliable presence to compliment the other two in a revamped bullpen in Queens. After all of the moves that new first year GM Brodie Van Wagenen has made this off season, the Mets faithful should be very excited to see what this coming season has in store.
